Individual advantage. National development. Global impact. Three of Mapúa’s strong calls that give life to one of its recent endeavors: The Mapúa English Language Center (ELC). The ELC is an offshoot of the Mapúa English Proficiency Program – a strategic plan of action designed to bring the English communicative ability of its academic community up to competitive levels. The Mapúa ELC recently implemented radical changes in the Institute’s English curriculum. Worked out with its foreign consultants, its new English programs are founded on materials and strategies found effective for second language learning. The programs incorporate communicative language assessment known as the Mapúa English Language Test (MELT). The MELT is given on entry, mid-course, and exit points of the learning process. Developed by foreign experts, the MELT is comparable with international language test scales. English language consciousness and proficiency development also give an added character to Mapúa’s faculty and staff training. Similar programs are offered to other members of the YGC Group of Companies as well as to a growing external clientele. This same program and system guides Mapúa’s English as a Second Language (ESL) Program which is currently running for foreign learners of the Institute’s Korean partner. The ESL Program of the Institute presents an avenue for the foreign learners to also experience the Mapúa learning ambience. It came as no surprise then when some of them expressed their plans of pursuing IT education also at Mapúa. As the ELC slogan exclaims: “At Mapúa, English is a tool we can’t do without!” For details English Language Programs, please contact the Mapúa English Language Center at 247-5000 local 1412 or 891-0722. |
